Summary: | This volume, relatively slim in compass but ambitious in intention, is a University of Edinburgh doctoral thesis, awarded in 2009 and brought to publication with notable speed. The author’s goal, stated at the end of the succinct review of scholarship since Harnack (R. S. Wilson, E. C. Blackman, B. Aland, R. J. Hoffmann, G. May), is to ‘take up the challenge’, not met by these luminaries, ‘to fill this gap’, namely a new picture of Marcion which is both coherent and convincing. Moll goes about the task in an ordered and disciplined fashion, seeking to avoid both the pervasive influence of Harnack’s Marcion and the idiosyncratic methodological choices of some of his predecessors. |
