Summary: | Paul Barnett’s aim to challenge the scholarly dichotomy of the ‘Jesus of history’ and the ‘Christ of faith’ should be welcomed. Barnett is at his best in his discussion of Christ in Paul’s letters. But the book is not without its weaknesses, and on some of the particulars, Barnett does not convince the present reviewer., Barnett’s ‘disclosure’ (p. 7), a partial acknowledgement of his own positionality, is commendable, and such openness is necessary, I believe, for progress in discussions about the Historical Jesus. But despite Barnett's disclosure at the beginning of this work, he often appears unaware of his own assumptions. |
