Summary: | The overall division between the Priestly and non-Priestly sections of the Pentateuch is one of the aspects of the older critical consensus that has remained relatively untouched by recent debates (the other being the separateness of Deuteronomy). There has also been a widespread return to the view that the original Priestly Work was a separate document and not a massive supplement to the older sections of the Pentateuch: only Erhard Blum takes the latter view in this volume. Even so the Priestly sections themselves have recently been the subject of a number of questions about their unity, date, and place in the composition of the Pentateuch. This volume of essays, which derives from a symposium held in 2007, provides a valuable introduction to these issues. |
