Description
Summary:I wrote complimentary reviews of Nicole Hecquet-Noti’s two-volume edition of Avitus’ De Spiritalis Historiae Gestis (SC 444 and 492) in JTS, ns 51 (2000), pp. 744–5 and 57 (2006), pp. 331–3. Her edition of the same author’s De Consolatoria Laude Castitatis shows the same qualities of professional competence and acute judgement, and is thoroughly to be recommended., This 666-line hexameter poem (written after 507) is made out by the manuscripts to be the sixth book of the Spiritual History, but it is something quite different. Its mysterious title hints at the genres it crosses: ‘il est aussi bien éloge poétique de la virginité consacrée que consolation adressée à la vierge qui a abandonné le monde, ou épithalame célébrant les noces spirituelles de la moniale et du Christ’ (p. 9).
