Description
Summary:Although this is a small book (with barely 140 pages of text and footnotes), it offers an authoritative survey of the field. Written with economy of style and clarity of structure, it provides Italian readers, certainly, with an enviably better introduction to the subject than many of those currently available in English. It is firmly based on an understanding of the work of Ewa Wipszycka and James E. Goehring, rooted in the conviction that from the outset (as Edwin Judge implied 35 years ago) Christian ascetics were engaged in the life of villages, towns, and cities. Such a view now has to be our starting point., The book is also governed by an argument.
