Description
Summary:This book, its author suggests, is about the Reformation: ‘not the Reformation as such’ but the ways in which Luther and the Reformation are marked in ‘public festivity, tourism and pilgrimage’ (p. 3). Barry Stephenson’s focus is on Wittenberg, and in particular on the two annual festivals: one marking Reformation Day (31 October), a church festival and civic holiday with a centuries-old tradition; the other celebrating the wedding of Martin Luther to Katharina von Bora in 1525, inaugurated in 1994 and celebrated on the second weekend of June. These Stephenson presents both through written descriptions of events and in the form of his own video recordings of the festivals, included on a DVD.
