Summary: | Pusey is scarcely remembered today for An Historical Enquiry into the Probable Causes of the Rationalist Character lately Predominant in the Theology of Germany (1828, 2nd edn. 1830), which he soon regretted, but this by-product of his study time in Germany learning Arabic is surely more valuable than some of his later scholarly work. In Berlin he met in Tholuck a kindred spirit, another theologian–orientalist whose priorities also lay in the defence of Christianity against modern rationalism. Tholuck's deep piety and ‘modern orthodoxy’ was already based on an appeal to the experience of sin and redemption whereas Pusey came to rely on the authority of the Fathers. |
