Summary: | In this third volume of papers from the international conferences on the Carthusians, held at Aggsbach and Brno in 2005, we are offered a total of five items, half of which are written by James Hogg. In the first paper Hogg compares and contrasts the notions of ‘Actio’ and ‘Contemplatio’, among other things, within the context of monasticism, and explores perceptions of the Carthusian life as shown in Philip Gröning's recent film Into Great Silence. Hogg discusses the inner and outer active life of the Carthusians in the context of their founder, St Bruno, the development of legislation in the order, and the life of the choir monks and lay brothers in the charterhouse of Marienau (Germany). |
