Description
Summary:The editor of this work, Professor Christoph Markschies, who from 2006 to 2010 was President of the Humboldt University of Berlin, engaged some time ago in a disputation at Leipzig with Professor Schnädelbach on the theme ‘Why do we need the Church? The necessity and the indispensability of the Christian faith’. It is no coincidence perhaps that the answer—or at least part of it—could be regarded as having been provided precisely by this very work which Professor Markschies has edited and translated, the five books of the De fide (On the Christian Faith) by Ambrose., This was one of the most popular works of Western Christianity in the remaining centuries of the early church and in the Middle Ages.
