Summary: | The opening statement in the introduction to this volume alerts readers to the fact that they are to expect something different. The editor states, ‘This volume is an experiment’ (p. ix). What is experimental about this volume is that, unlike major critical editions of patristic texts, it contains no detailed introduction, no new critical edition of the original-language texts, few extensive text-critical notes, and no in-depth commentary. Instead, what is offered is a ‘bare-bones’ translation. The aim is to place a serviceable translation in the hands of students and scholars alike.
