Description
Summary:The participants in the conference whose proceedings are collected in this volume are excellent scholars, wielding the pen with a candour and neutrality of judgement that were not vouchsafed to their common subject, the acrimonious author of the Elenchos or Refutation of all Heresies. The first contribution, following an editorial summary of all twelve by Norelli, is a reflection on ‘The Continuing Construction of Heresy: Hippolyt’s Refutatio in Context’ by Winrich Löhr. He concludes that the standard charge against all heretics, that they have added their own conceits to the word of God, is married in Hippolytus for the first time to the claim (derived from Justin) that the true faith is older than any of the pagan schools which accuse it of innovation.
