Summary: | Willis Barnstone is an experienced translator, with a long list of translations to his name, mainly of poetry, and ranging from classical Greek to biblical Hebrew, Spanish, German, and modern Greek. He has now accomplished what is more than a translation: a complete version of the New Testament plus three Gnostic gospels, with a commentary in the form of explanatory footnotes, and some three hundred pages of introduction and discussion of issues of textual history and interpretation. He has been well served by his publisher. The massive volume is a pleasure to handle and easy to read, apart from one shortcoming: chapter numbers are given only at the beginning of each chapter and do not appear on other pages, so that searching for a reference can be unduly time-consuming. |
