In doing so, Rajak starts in chapter 1 (pp. 24–63) by analysing the Letter of Aristeas (hereafter: LA), the only document from Antiquity that contains an account of the translation of the Torah, with the Ptolemaic king as the foremost participant in the story. It is pointed out that LA is marked by a double thread, a mixture of Hellenistic Alexandrian culture (‘an embodiment of Alexandrian Jewish identity’; p. 51) on the one hand, as well as of Jewish elements on the other.
