Summary: | This somewhat unusual and unintentionally very funny book is a biography of one of the more interesting of the early Victorian churchmen, F. W. Robertson (1816–53), who made his name as a preacher and lecturer while he was minister of the Trinity Chapel in Brighton. In a work which is episodic in form, Beardsley presents him as a romantic figure struggling to find a balance between the masculine and feminine aspects of his personality. She is keen to see his importance less in terms of his contribution to making liberal theology more acceptable in the pulpit and more as an ideal-type or representative of the conflicts in Victorian sexuality. |
