Summary: | Recent years have seen a formidable amount of new research published on the subject of Mary I's short-lived restoration of Catholicism in England and Wizeman's book is an important addition to that scholarship and a forceful contribution to the lively debate which surrounds English Catholic identity in the sixteenth century. The book is a detailed study of the religious texts published between 1553 and 1558, its findings arranged according to theological themes of revelation, soteriology, ecclesiology, sacramental theology, piety, and eschatology. It gives a meticulous account of the works in question whilst at the same time locating them firmly in their historical context. |
