Sumario:This rich, seasoned study comes from a historian of the Arian controversy, and focuses primarily on Augustine's formulation of the doctrine of the Trinity, from his earliest writing on (pp. 1–120). Particularly valuable is the author's attention to the background in the Latin Fathers, of whom some 20 are quoted, including such exotics as Phoebadius of Agen, Philastrius of Brescia, Faustinus, and Isaac Iudaeus. This intensive spadework around the foundations is followed by discussions of Augustine's christological epistemology (pp. 121–70), the inner logic of the Trinity (pp. 177–272), and the psychological analogies (pp. 275–318).
