Summary: | This is a remarkable book and every serious student and scholar of Paul should take note of it. It is impossible in a short review to do justice to the breadth of scholarship, richness of insight, and superb analysis displayed. The text is 239 pages; the endnotes are about a third of that number of pages but in a smaller font and packed with fascinating detail. There are also 11 tables, and excellent indexes. Pervo says that the book began with a series of lectures in the mid-1980s and has been in the making in the quarter century since then. Certainly, the book has the feel of long and mature reflection., In a nutshell, Pervo seeks to uncover how later generations (until about 180 ce) took Paul’s letters ‘in their attempts to make the apostle useful and relevant for later times’ (p. 38). |
