Description
Summary:Fabienne Jourdan offers a substantial and most welcome contribution to our knowledge of Clement of Alexandria, the second-century Christian erudite, and his assimilation of his Greco-Roman background. Her significant study investigates Clement’s integration of the classical myth of Orpheus into his didactic context and Christian intelligent apologetic. The book originated in Jourdan’s doctoral thesis submitted in 2007, which received the ‘Prix Adalbert Hamman 2009–2010’ established by the Association J.-P. Migne., Jourdan examines the metamorphosis of the legendary Greek hero Orpheus from his original status as a musician-seducer of wild animals. With the appearance of Christianity, Orpheus received a new role as a figure of the Saviour.
