Description
Summary:This Festschrift is compiled in honour of Professor Emeritus John Emerton. It contains 16 articles, written by leading Jewish and Christian scholars from Europe, the USA, and Israel. It is an excellent collection of original research and can be highly recommended., The studies fall into three parts. The first part contains six studies on issues related to Genesis. Arie van der Kooij investigates the Mesopotamian background of four key topics in Genesis 2–3 (the prohibition, the Garden of Eden, the frame of the narrative, and the two trees). He maintains that the biblical narrative shows familiarity with the Gilgamesh Epic and the myth of Adapa, yet also criticizes several aspects of Mesopotamian thought. Terry Fenton explores the textual history of Gen.
