Description
Summary:This scholarly but immensely readable monograph tackles the neglected genre of sixteenth-century biographies of reformers. Rather than attempt a general survey, Backus limits herself to a representative sample of the lives of reformers of various orders of magnitude: Luther, Zwingli, Oecolampadius, Vadian, Vermigli, Bullinger, Simler, Wolf, Lavater, Pellikan, Calvin, and Beza. Also included, for comparison, are a biography of a Zurich intellectual (Gesner) who was not a religious leader, an autobiography (Pellikan’s), and some examples of reformers’ lives essayed by seventeenth-century figures as diverse as Pierre Bayle and Cardinal Richelieu.
