Summary:The past decade has seen an increasing number of studies on ancient visual culture (‘the Greek and Roman “gaze” ’) and its interactions with literary culture. The book here reviewed is an attempt to include the early Christian experience in this picture, mainly with reference to second-century apologetic literature. Its three parts are subdivided into seven chapters. Part I deals with methodological questions regarding the literary sources: chapter 1 (pp. 21–50) explores the question regarding the genre of the second-century Christian ‘apologies’ in the light of their wider cultural background, especially the phenomenon known as the Second Sophistic.
