Description
Summary:This very readable study is prompted by the body of recent scholarly debate about the earliest forms of devotion to Jesus and by Dunn’s practical concern about Christian worship today., The Introduction explores the question posed in the title, and spells out what Dunn offers as collateral questions, which successively form the foci of the following chapters. In the final sentences of the Introduction, Dunn gives the two theses of his book: For the first Christians worship of Jesus ‘was a way of worshipping God’, and ‘worship of Jesus is only possible or acceptable within what is now understood to be a Trinitarian framework’ (p. 6). We see in this statement the combination of historical judgement and theological/practical concerns that are woven through the book.
