Description
Summary:In this thoroughly researched publication, Weisberg illustrates the regularity of levirate unions within Judaism despite a variety of reinterpretations of the practice over the course of time. She argues that such reinterpretations occurred in tandem with, or in response to, value-shifts within Jewish communities regarding, amongst other things, the different roles of women, inheritance, and kinship systems., Although by training Weisberg is a scholar of rabbinics, she nevertheless makes an admirable attempt to utilize the range of data concerned with levirate unions.
