Summary: | These essays celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Rudolf Smend’s doctorate at Basel University in 1958 and the presentation to him of a major prize sponsored by the Basel firm of J. R. Geigy, which was later merged with CIBA. The essays have for their main theme the historicizing of theology and the history (Forschungsgeschichte) of this process, thus discussing matters that have remained high on Professor Smend’s scholarly agenda throughout his distinguished career, beginning with his postgraduate studies at Basel, where he began a life-long interest in the work of Wilhelm Martin Leberecht de Wette (1780–1849), who held the Chair of Theology there from 1822 and became Rector of the University. |
