Description
Summary:This book comprises the author’s 2008 Gifford lectures at the University of Glasgow. It is identifed in the introduction as an engagement with the ‘new atheism’ of Richard Dawkins et al., and (without being in any sense a survey or review of their writings) outlines some of the arguments which may be employed in defence of religious belief against the scientific and moral criticisms proferred with such militancy by this movement. The introduction and chapter one examine the origins of modern atheism and its newly enhanced self-confidence against the background of changes in religious belief in the western world over the last few centuries, with reference particularly to the secularization debate.
