Description
Summary:The day-to-day life and observances of the Carthusians remains an object of fascination to the outside, secular world, evidenced in recent years by numerous books and at least one film, Into Great Silence. A no less important source for gaining a general impression of how a charterhouse is, or was, supposed to operate may, of course, be found in the statutes of the order. This edition of a commentary on the Carthusian statutes from the Charterhouse of Villeneuve-lès Avignon (Provence), written in French c.1768–72, not long before the upheavals of the French Revolution, adds further information to how the statutes of the Carthusian order were interpreted at a given time.
