Summary: | Gregory, a monk at the monastery of Narek on the southern shore of Lake Van, is the most famous of all Armenian religious poets, the author of hymns, panegyrics, a commentary on the Song of Songs, and, most important of all, a collection of meditative prayers entitled Book of Lamentations. The two books under review are part of a larger scholarly enterprise in the Armenian world commemorating the millennium of his death in 1003. The proceedings of the international colloquium held in Rome comprise 18 papers, with a conclusion by the then Superior of the Jesuit Order, Peter-Hans Kolvenbach. The papers are devoted to various aspects of Gregory’s literary production, his theology, and the more general background of Armenian culture at the time. |
