Description
Summary:The proceedings of the conference held in Maynooth to mark the 1,700th anniversary of the start of the ‘Great Persecution’ in 303 have taken much longer to appear in print than the persecution itself lasted in the West, where it appears to have lapsed within two years, even before first Constantine, then Maxentius, who both came to power in 306, ordained an end to it in the territories which they ruled. The volume has a distinctly out-of-date air about it. Unless I have read inattentively, it contains no discussion of the ending of persecution by Constantine and Maxentius, who are presented as merely continuing the policies of the former’s father Constantius (p. 55).
