Summary: | Bertrand Pinçon’s starting point is with scholars who have advocated ‘bonheur’ as the main emphasis of Qoheleth. He is himself in favour of the ‘enigma’ of the relativity of ‘bonheur’ and ‘malheur’ that are in tension in the book. He is against the idea that the book has a monolithic message and argues that this tension speaks especially powerfully to us today. In chapter 1 he considers positive interpretations of Qoheleth by scholars, in chapter 2 negative ones, and then in chapter 3 he looks at the tension between the two sets of views. Chapters 4 and 5 explore the context of the so-called ‘refrains’ on ‘good’ ( ), which Pinçon prefers to call ‘words of happiness’. |
