Description
Summary:The end of the atheist communist governments of Russia and eastern Europe resulted not only in a realignment of the politics of Europe but also in a new freedom for the Orthodox churches. They had become used to living under varying degrees of persecution under the Ottoman empire, Arab states in the Middle East, absolutist and westernizing governments in the Russia of Peter the Great and his successors, and then the atheist communist governments. Since 1990 there have been dramatic changes in Orthodox countries with countless new churches built, revival in the monastic life, and also a new involvement in education in schools, higher education institutions, and seminaries.
