Summary: | A supplementary volume to a great project inevitably lacks the coherence and chronology of preceding volumes in which Newman's theological and personal pilgrimage could be traced in fascinating details. The Letters and Diaries began, in order of publication, with Newman's 1845 conversion to the Church of Rome and continued until his death in 1890. These volumes were then followed by ten volumes of Newman's Anglican letters and diaries. Volume 31, the last of the Roman Catholic volumes, included 174 letters which it had been impossible to include chronologically in volumes 11–30. |
