Description
Summary:These four splendid volumes are the result of a project to record all surviving sermons in Middle English, whether printed or, as is the case with the majority, in manuscript. The project is only part of a more ambitious plan, entitled SERMO, to catalogue all the sermons in the vernacular languages of medieval Catholic Christendom, of which the German and Dutch sections have made some progress. In this repertorium, 1,481 sermons in 162 manuscripts are described, all from British, Irish, or North American libraries. In addition to manuscript descriptions the occasion of the sermons is given and, crucially, a full summary of the contents is provided. The editors found some difficulty in determining what a sermon was, and have sensibly opted for a pragmatic solution.
