| Summary: | The title of this learned and intellectually demanding study may be confusing for some readers. It is not a biography of Possidius in our contemporary understanding of a biography. The article on him by Mark Vessey in Augustine through the Ages occupies just over a page, and contains all the information that we currently have about him. The names of Augustine, Aurelius, Alypius, Evodius, and some other African bishops appear in the book, but are only a tiny handful of a large and self-confident body, of which we know nothing individually. Possidius gives his name to the title as the biographer of Augustine, and for his activity in the campaign to suppress Donatism, leading to the Conference of Carthage in 411. |
