Description
Summary:This is a work of great learning and application. Mac Gaw has read widely and has not only read but evaluated his many authors. It should be noted that the book is based on a doctoral thesis, which has been abridged for the purpose of publication, which perhaps accounts for the fact that certain topics, for example the significance of the Council of Arles of 314, seem to the reviewer to have been accorded less attention that they deserve; but this is clearly a matter of opinion. The author sees the Donatist controversy as ‘une lutte pour le pouvoir dans le structure ecclésiastique … une lutte pour la gestion du pouvoir’ (p. 36), rather than a theological controversy in the strict sense, and still less as an expression of African nationalism.
