Sumario: | This is a slightly revised Ph.D. thesis that was completed at Cornell University in 1998 under Gary A. Rendsburg as the principal adviser. The book is framed as a response to recent proponents of the view that the Yahwist or J source of the Pentateuch was composed in the exilic or post-exilic period rather than the (early) pre-exilic period, as many biblical scholars have traditionally believed (pp. 1–3, 162–3).
