Summary: | For those of us in the English-speaking world interested in religious thought, the German Philosopher Robert Spaemann has had stature principally because of his Happiness and Benevolence (trans. J. Alberg; Edinburgh: T & T Clark, 2000), and this largely because until now that work has been unique in his output for being available in an English translation. Now, thanks to the translation by Oliver O’Donovan and the enterprise shown by Oxford University Press, his Persons (which originally appeared in 1996 as Personen: Versuche über den Unterschied zwischen ‘etwas’ und ‘jemand’) may also have the opportunity of assuming stature as a classic. But here the concern is with the fundamental questions and arguments bearing on the social character of personal existence. |
