Summary: | Brent Waters of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary has written a much needed theological and ethical account of the family in Christian thought. Unlike many other writers in this area he shows a very thorough acquaintance with the complexities of biblical, historical, and contemporary accounts of the family and strives long and hard to produce a coherent understanding of the family that does justice to them. It may well be that this is finally an impossible task and that the sharp tensions evident throughout these accounts are actually incommensurable. This would certainly explain the seemingly intractable divisions currently to be found in many Christian denominations. |
