Description
Summary:The book under review surveys charisma and its exercise as related in early Egyptian monastic literature. Dr Vecoli's approach to the material is signalled from the opening lines of the introduction—an extended quotation from Peter Brown's The Making of Late Antiquity. Vecoli's study is informed by an approach to the social history of late ancient Christianity that will be familiar to readers of Brown's books. Thus, the discussion of charisma is indebted to Max Weber's sociological explorations. He also references his work to Christian debates from Harnack to Küng about charisma amongst the earliest Christians.
