Description
Summary:Most of Origen's readers will agree that his most original and characteristic thoughts are not to be found in his Homilies on Exodus, at least as they now survive. If the Latin rendering, which is all that remains, can be trusted, his name for the highest sense of the text in this work is the mysticus intellectus (Hom. 1.4, 4.7), and it is apt to be expounded before the moralis figura (Hom. 4.8), which corresponds (more often in the Latin of Rufinus than elsewhere) to the second of the three senses attributed to the Scriptures in On First Principles 4.2.4. In another place, the passage from the historical and literal sense to the mystery is declared to be both arduous and sublime, but its steps are not counted (Hom. 3.2).
