| Summary: | Geoffrey Dunn has now published a comprehensive study of Adu. Iudaeos, to which he has devoted and published much research before. He seems to have mastered a great deal of literature and information, not only about Tertullian, but about the principles and practice of ancient rhetoric as the early church received it and used it. Noting that Robert D. Sider had examined the works of Tertullian, and identified the signs of rhetorical training and practice in most of them, he has tried to do the same in Adu. Iudaeos, a work which is listed among the dubia of Tertullian: many scholars judge either the whole or the second half not authentic. The later chapters have a different character from the earlier, and a puzzling relation to various similar passages in Adu. Marcionem. |
