Description
Summary:By devoting two volumes of a multi-volume church history to the period ad 30–600, the editors have allowed the author space to explain not only the main contours of the period, but also the complicated political background to e.g. persecution, doctrinal controversies, and the Roman empire's relationship with its neighbours (especially the ‘barbarian’ Christian tribes). Each book includes very useful thematic chapters on Christian worship, ministry, ethics, and ascesis. Volume 2 concludes with a focus on north-western (including Celtic) Christianity. Otherwise, the books follow a chronological structure: they are clearly written, with a strong sense of narrative.
