Summary: | Does the historical-critical method of interpreting the Scriptures need a defence? This collection of essays, and especially the last, suggests that in American Roman Catholic circles it still does. The articles, published between 1961 and 2004, were gathered together by John Donahue for a specialist course at Berkeley and revised for publication by the original author, who may justly be described as the doyen of American Catholic biblical scholarship, editor of both The Jerome Commentary on Holy Scripture (1968) and the ‘New Jerome’ (1990), and one of the world's foremost scholars in biblical Aramaic and papyrology. |
