Summary: | Esther de Boer already has three books on Mary Magdalene and the Gospel of Mary to her credit. This latest is her opportunity to set out in extenso a collection of biblical, patristic, and other early sources related to this enigmatic figure or to contemporary attitudes to women's authority. For example, Paul's teachings about women in chapter 8 are usefully followed by later patristic interpretations of his words to show where and how the earlier Christian teachings were used, especially by Origen, Didymus, and Tertullian. It is useful to be able to have such citations set out and organized in this book, but de Boer's attached comments on the texts are disappointingly sketchy. |
