Summary: | Adele Reinhartz's previous books on John's Gospel and the filming of Scripture have found in this volume a natural successor. Focusing on Jesus’ portrayal in films (she wisely uses ‘Hollywood’ as shorthand to cover all commercial film), this book is a welcome addition to the growing canon of theological work at the movies. Theological interaction with film is by no means confined to films which in one way or another are explicitly religious, but this treatment of ‘Jesus films’ adds a very useful tome to the growing library. It is lucidly written with little technical language, is clear and well structured., The book is divided into five parts. The first examines issues relating to the genre, suggesting that the ‘Jesus films’ should be seen as biopics. |
