Summary: | The Song of Songs is arguably one of the most enigmatic biblical books in the canon, raising a host of questions in the mind of even the most casual reader. What kind of material is it? What is it doing in a collection of religious writings with which it seems to have very little in common? Who wrote it, and when, and why? Is there any comparative ancient material that is similar to it, and how might that help to illuminate the Song? How has the Song been used down the ages in post-biblical interpretations? Many of these questions, and others too, are addressed in this wide-ranging collection of essays, which features work from British, European, and North American scholars across the disciplines of Old Testament, Egyptology, Classics, Oriental Studies, and German. |
