Description
Summary:This critical edition of Newman's University Sermons is warmly to be welcomed. The late Gerard Tracey, whose sudden death in 2003 deprived the world of Newman Studies of a mind of vast archival knowledge, collaborated on this edition with his co-editor Professor J. D. Earnest, Professor of English Emeritus at Murray State University, Kentucky, who has brought it to a triumphant conclusion., The University Sermons, with their exploration of the relationship of faith and reason, and their critique of both faith and reason, remain an outstanding theological and philosophical achievement, which Newman was to build on later in The Grammar of Assent (1870).
