Summary: | The work of editing the various manuscripts containing the chartae of the Carthusian general chapter continues with an edition of Grande Chartreuse MS 1 Cart. 19 and Grenoble, Bibliothèque Municipale MS 439, in volumes 1–3, by John Clark, and a photocopy of Grenoble, Bibliothèque Municipale MS 439 in volume 4, presented by James Hogg. The Grenoble manuscript contains chartae from 1557 and 1571–5, and the manuscript from La Grande Chartreuse from 1560 to 1570. This collection is of particular importance textually, in that it contains master copies or ‘exemplares’ of the chartae written by scribes from La Grande Chartreuse: ‘They therefore have a pre-eminent textual authority’ (vol. 1, p. ix). However we have to add several caveats. |
