Summary: | This lengthy book, devoted to apocryphal works relating to the birth and childhood of Jesus, represents the first of a planned publication of Irish apocryphal texts. It is a collaborative effort involving nine scholars, Irish and Continental, under the direction of Martin McNamara. Since Irish versions of apocryphal works may derive from Continental recensions earlier than any that have come down to us in Latin, and since this volume includes texts of Continental Latin apocrypha as well as Irish ones, this work will potentially interest many who work on apocryphal material, not just those with an interest in Irish apocrypha. It is the fruit of much labour and erudition, and contains much of interest; and yet, despite all this, it is a bewildering and flawed work. |
