Summary: | Kevin Hester has tackled intelligently the difficult task of pitching a study of this kind in its context of intellectual history in such a way as to be faithful to the assumptions of Gregory's world and intelligible to the modern reader who may be unfamiliar with it. He keeps close to the texts and provides the Latin in the footnotes. However, this remains a ‘published thesis’; and it is always worthwhile to turn a thesis into a book before its publication. There are a few remaining awkwardnesses as a consequence., He is sensitive to the important fact that ‘Gregory is no speculative theologian, but he is a contemplative theologian’ (p. 39) and does not try to force consistencies and abstractions upon the pastoral mind of his subject or turn his spirituality into theological analysis. |
