Description
Summary:In this exceptionally promising and ambitious monograph, Professor Markschies of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin sets out to erect a revised paradigm for the study of ancient Christianity. The author demonstrates that it was the diversity of ecclesiastical institutions that created the plurality of Christian theologies in the first centuries, and he compellingly argues that the study of these institutions is therefore the key to discerning the identity of Christian theology amidst the variety of its earliest expressions.
